How to Choose the Right SPC Flooring for Your Project
March 15, 2026
Picking SPC flooring isn't complicated — but the wrong combination of thickness and wear layer will cost you in callbacks. Here's the contractor's shortcut to a spec that lasts.
- Thickness: 5mm minimum for living areas; 5.5mm+ for sound and feel.
- Wear layer: 12mil for light residential, 20mil for high-traffic, 28mil+ for rentals or commercial.
- Underlayment: Look for attached IXPE — it adds sound deadening and moisture protection.
- Subfloor: Flat within 3/16" per 10' span. Skip this step and you'll feel it underfoot.
What is SPC flooring?
SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite. It's rigid-core vinyl built around a limestone-PVC core that resists dents, shrugs off water, and stays dimensionally stable through seasonal temperature swings.
For contractors, the appeal is simple: fast click-lock installation, low maintenance, premium aesthetics, and a price point that lands well below engineered hardwood at project quantities.
Picking thickness and wear layer
These are the two specs that matter most. Use the table below as a starting point — then confirm with the manufacturer.
| Application | Total Thickness | Wear Layer |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrooms, light residential | 5mm | 12mil |
| Living areas, kitchens | 5mm - 5.5mm | 20mil |
| Entryways, multi-family corridors | 5.5mm - 6.5mm | 20mil |
| Rentals, light commercial | 6mm+ | 28mil+ |
Installation best practices
SPC floats over the subfloor with a click-lock system — no glue, no nails, no specialty tools. The install is fast, but a few details separate a clean job from a callback.
- Acclimate the product — let planks sit in the installation space for at least 48 hours. SPC is dimensionally stable, but acclimation still matters.
- Prep the subfloor — flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span. Fill the low spots, grind the high spots.
- Leave expansion gaps — 1/4 inch around all walls and fixed objects. SPC moves less than other vinyl, but proper gapping still prevents buckling.
- Use the right underlayment — attached IXPE pads are ideal. If your product doesn't include one, add a 1mm-1.5mm underlayment. Never use thick carpet padding.
